Kindle hacks
Those are a few hacks for Kindle 3 and Kindle DX. I used a Mac for most of these, so there may be OSX-specific stuff here and there.
They are provided AS IS, with absolutely NO SUPPORT.
- An archive of several packages gathered from OptWare, and cooked to run on the Kindle storage (no need to create a large ext3 file): text editors (nano, mg), network utilities (tcpdump, wakelan), text-based web browsers (lynx, links, elinks), and even nethack (which can be played using the MyTS terminal emulator). Just untar the package ar the root of the Kindle storage (make sure you do not have already a directory named "opt").
- Instructions and script to build a Kindle toolchain on OSX
- A script to build tinyproxy for the K3 and DXG (requires a cross-toolchain, of course). Tinyproxy (source mirror) helps a lot for 3G tethering using USB networking by adding the right headers to the http requests. This may be very useful in case of emergency: no 3G phone, no Wifi, and the builtin browser doesn't handle the required web site properly. Requires the USB networking hack and launchpad.
- Upgrade a Kindle DXG from firmware 3.2.1 to 3.3 (may work on a DX too) - but you have to upgrade from 2.5.8 to 3.2.1 first (1), and enabling active content (a.k.a. Kindlets) is a bit tricky (read carefully 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
- Upgrade a Kindle DXG from firmware 3.3 to 3.4 (may work on a DX too)
- Readability hack to get read of the "can't open multiple windows" problem with the Kindle experimental browser (archived package)
Kindle Browser Bookmarks
Here are some bookmarks I use in the Kindle builtin browser (you can edit them using the Kindle Bookmark Editor):
